On Jan. 21st 2015, Baidu released the 2014 China Mobile Sites Trends Report when it’s hosting China Mobile Ecosystem Conference in Beijing. I took some main excerpts from the report and translated them as below.
1. The Growth Rate of Mobile Sites Indexed by Baidu
There was a big leap (105% increase) from 2013 to 2014, mainly because in June. 2013 Baidu restructured its business by making mobile a business unit, and launched free Siteapp to any websites owner without budget to develop their own mobile site. If you use Baidu Siteapp to generate your mobile site, you can get your mobile site quickly indexed by Baidu.
2. Popular Mobile Sites Recognized by Baidu
Most popular and high quality mobile sites are in the categories of local serivces, shopping and APP Downloading. Considering the nature of these mobile sites’ users, most of them either looking for location based service or on the go, it’s not surprising to see them appeared on the top of list.
3. SEO Issues That Quality Mobile Sites Need to Overcome
Even though most digital manager are acquainted with Search Engine Optimization concept and skills in websphere, they pay less attention to it when their web properties go mobile. Baidu finds a lot of mobile site with search engine unfriendly issues, things like site without User Agent set up, title and meta not optimized, no Geolocation Attribute configured, etc. Some of these are part of best SEO practices and could be handled easily, while some of them are only related to mobile SEO and require special treatment.
4. Technical Issues that Low Quality Mobile Sites have
Baidu also identified a large number of low quality mobile sites, most of which generated via Baidu SiteApp and shows the extension of webphere’s dark side. Common issues include tag spamming, pop-out ads, and page not accessible till log-in, etc. Baidu launched Icebucket Algorithm 1.0 and 2.0 in Aug. and Dec. 2014 to hammer these low quality mobile sites.
5. Potentials: Websites to Go Mobile
A lot of websites haven’t had their mobile version yet, so we shall be seeing categories in .edu and .gov, company sites, and tier 2 and 3 cities portals going mobile in the coming years.
